Spring break: Walloon tourism is impacted by inflation, weather and “revenge travel”

The spring holidays were a “crescendo” for the Walloon tourism sector, thanks to increasingly mild weather, Visit Wallonia, the Walloon tourism promotion organization, analyzed on Monday.

THE balance sheet at the end of these two weeks of vacation, on the French-speaking side, remains “similar to 2023 for a large part of the operators”, estimates the regional agency, which recalls, however, that the precise figures still need to be analyzed.

The weather, unwelcoming in the first week, then mild in the second week, was the arbiter of many activities, tip Visit Wallonia. Outdoor attractions suffered from a drop in attendance at the start of the holidays, before experiencing an increase, like the amusement park Walibiwhich notes best results than at the same time last year. The museums and the Euro Space Center mainly brought together the public in the first week.

Impact of “revenge travel” on local tourism

On the accommodation side, reservations were later than usual, but join last year’s figures according to an initial trend. The asynchrony of school holidays with Flanders is not badly perceived by the sector, underlines Visit Wallonia. According to a study by the Walloon Tourism Observatory, almost 40% of accommodations do not feel any impact and 24% are positive about the impact of the change in school rhythm on their attendance overall. Attractions, for their part, 36% feel a positive effect and 38% consider that there is no impact. The operators, however, mention concerns about team planning, as well asa lack of availability of students following these calendar changes.

Finally, the Walloon tourism promotion organization estimates that in addition to inflation and the weather, the fashion for “revenge travel” (the fact of going on a trip abroad at great expense after a long period without vacation) has a impact on local tourism.
