Fires in Canada: thousands of people evacuated

In Canada, thousands of people have been evacuated in the West of the country due to gigantic fires. These fires started even earlier than last year when records had already been broken (15 million hectares burned, eight firefighters dead, 230,000 people evacuated). The winter was not harsh enough, raising fears of very complicated months ahead.

It has in fact not snowed enough in Western Canada where fires with the drought start, like last year, much earlier than in previous years. 3,500 people have already had to leave their town. The flames are now getting closer to the houses. In the two provinces (British Columbia and Alberta), several hundred fire outbreaks have been recorded. Residents are preparing to evacuate, particularly in Fort McMurray, where 2,500 homes were destroyed last summer. Amount ofdamage: more than seven billion euros.

In Canada, this drought is of great concern and the consequences of these fires go far beyond this country. The greenhouse gases emitted are gigantic. A billion tonnes of carbon were emitted last year, twice as much as we emit in France. Very bad news for global warming.
