Biodiversity: The celebration of the 4th International Argan Tree Day was punctuated by fruitful debates both in Morocco and at the UN highlighting the urgency of action to preserve this precious ecosystem in a context of climatic upheaval.

Great importance given to the protection of the argan tree on a national and international scale. This interest was demonstrated during the celebration of the 4th International Argan Tree Day organized on Friday, May 10 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This celebration was marked by opening remarks, from Morocco, from Mohammed Sadiki, Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests.

For his part, Omar Hilale, permanent representative of Morocco to the UN, chaired the discussions and debates which saw the participation of illustrious UN speakers as well as several national and international organizations, notably the president of the Mohammed VI Foundation for research and conservation of the argan tree, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program, the Director-General of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO), the Deputy Director-General of Unesco for Culture, and the Director of the Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests in the Department of Social and Economic Affairs. In Morocco, the 7th edition of the International Argan Congress was organized, the opening of which was chaired by Minister Sadiki in Essaouira.

With the theme “The argan tree facing climate change”, this congress was an opportunity to highlight the urgency of acting to preserve this precious ecosystem in a context of unprecedented climatic upheavals. “Impregnated with a sustainable prospective vision, the International Argan Congress aspires, beyond sharing the achievements of scientific research, to highlight the argan tree as a lever for development. It also aims to propose innovations that meet future requirements while addressing the measures and precautions necessary to promote the sustainable use of the resources of the argan biosphere,” we learn in this sense.

The discussions focused on the impact of climate change on the argan tree and its ecosystem.
The participants also debated the conservation of resources and the management of the ecosystem, the reproductive technologies of the argan tree, innovation and technological applications in the valorization of argan products, as well as local knowledge and the cultural practices of the argan grove.
