Test of Helldivers 2, the cooperative shooter as funny as it is supercharged

What is the best way to bring peace between people? The exchange? International cooperation? In Helldiverse 2released on February 8 on PlayStation 5 and PC, the answer is more simplistic: it’s war.

The game imagines a future in which humans have conquered space. But far from resting on its laurels, the human race strives to maintain peace on its territory, an aggregate of planets called Super-Earth. Problem: the human empire is threatened by alien races that must be fought. And that’s where you, Helldiver, come into play.

An assumed nanar

The storyline is basic, almost caricatured. Nasty aliens and nasty robots (yes, those are really the first two enemy types in the game) have the nerve to resist human colonization on their planets. Your role is to pacify said planets by completing several missions: destruction of nests, rescue and escort of human teams, maintenance of scientific installations… All while trying not to be eaten sushi style.

Until then, nothing really new in the video game landscape. But what makes the strength of Helldiverse 2 is not so much its storyline as its gameplay (i.e. the gaming experience offered).

First of all, the game is beautiful. Whether it’s the graphics, the soundtrack or the production of the cutscenes, everything has been designed to make it as immersive as possible, and it works. From your ship, hovering above the planet you are about to dive to, you can see the fighting raging. When your capsule lands and you set foot on the battlefield, a feeling of extreme loneliness takes hold of you. When you finally reach your extraction point and your capsule flies away, you breathe a real sigh of relief. Particular care has been taken with the dialogues as well as the voices, making the game often funny.

Then, the fact that the game doesn’t really seem to take itself seriously (as could Conversely an opus of Call of Duty ) is really appreciated. From the start, an informative (or propaganda, depending on your point of view) cutscene sets the scene and summons you to earn your place on Super-Earth by defending “freedom and democracy”. Throughout the missions, your character will make a number of remarks, each more absurd and funny than the last. The humor is acidic, at least as much as the slime of the monsters that attack you.

Unity is fun

Last aspect, the most important: cooperation, the principle on which Helldiverse 2 was built. You have four seats in your aircraft, voice chat (so you can chat with your partners) and a multitude of means of rapid communication. Ask for ammunition, point a direction, call for help… All this is possible and even necessary, as the game can be difficult. And that’s the most important point: playing Helldiverse 2 solo is almost impossible, unless you are an outstanding strategist.

The enemies are numerous, powerful and resistant. If you play alone, it will be very easy for them to surround you and make you their taste. So yes, you benefit from “stratagems”, key combinations which allow you to obtain different advantages such as a powerful weapon, a localized missile strike or even bags of ammunition, but you still have to have the time to call them !

This extreme violence and this frenetic rhythm place the game in line with the saga Doom , known for its ultra-violent games and no quiet time. But the cooperation and communication part between players brings it just as close to horror games Left 4 Dead Or Back 4 Blood.

Since its release two weeks ago, Helldiverse 2 is at the top of the attendance rankings on the PC gaming platform Steam, with a peak of more than 400,000 simultaneous players, not counting console players. A huge success which was accompanied by technical problems, the game’s servers not being prepared for such traffic. This shows the support that this opus is winning for the moment.
