Like other countries in the world, Niger celebrated International Nurses Day yesterday, Sunday, May 12, 2024. On this occasion, the Minister of Public Health, Population and Social Affairs, Doctor Colonel Major Garba Hakimi, delivered a message in which he recalled that this day corresponds to the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, this valiant woman who laid the foundations of the contemporary nursing profession. She made nursing a respected occupation by establishing training, emphasizing the importance of continuing education, and distinguishing nursing from medicine.

The theme of this day is “Our nurses, our future, the economic power of care”. The commemoration of this day constitutes, for the body of nurses, a final opportunity to reflect on the situation of the profession and the working conditions of this professional category.

For the Minister in charge of Health, the choice of this theme is not accidental. The role of nurses is to facilitate access to quality care for patients. They also play a role in the health-disease continuum. Through this theme, it is a question of recalling how a strategic investment in nursing care can bring considerable economic and social benefits for our States.

A massive investment in nursing care, declared the minister, could undoubtedly strengthen the march towards universal health coverage. “Our country is in search of its sovereignty and its true independence. As Minister of Health, I urge nurses to contribute more to improving the results of our health system. To this end, they must continually re-evaluate the practice of nursing and seek innovative and more effective ways for access to care and the well-being of our communities. Furthermore, it should be remembered that access to the exercise of the profession is now under the control of the Council of the National Order of Nurses of Niger,” declared Doctor Colonel Major Garba Hakimi.

The National Council of the Order of Nurses, he said, brings together all nursing professionals qualified to practice their profession. Its main mission is to ensure the maintenance of the principles of ethics, morality, probity and competence essential to the exercise of the profession by registering members on its roll. And also to disseminate the rules of good practice in nursing.

The Minister in charge of Health notified that on the occasion of the celebration of this day, it is planned among other activities, a conference debate on the theme of the Day namely “our nurses, our future, economic power care “. Throughout the month of May, other conferences will be held on various themes such as training, the provision of nursing care and the role and place of the Order for access to the profession and the quality of care. The Minister in charge of Health also urged nurses to think more about the efforts to make for better patient satisfaction because “they have confidence in you and you must deserve this confidence,” he said. he concluded.
