Violent storms hit France this Sunday. Locally, a month’s worth of precipitation fell in less than two hours. As a result, part of the west of the country has its feet in the water. This Monday morning, Calvados was placed on orange “flood” alert.

After a weekend marked by summer temperatures and blue skies across the country, the weather took a sudden turn for the worse this Sunday. The sudden drop in temperatures was sometimes accompanied by heavy rainfall, as in Normandy and Île-de-France where the equivalent of a month’s rain fell in less than two hours.

A level of precipitation which was unable to infiltrate into the ground and which gave rise to impressive flooding. Floating cars in Calvados, torrents of mud in the Oise… the images are impressive.

This Monday morning, the Calvados department was placed on orange alert due to a “significant flood on the Dives”, a river of around a hundred kilometers which flows into the Channel at Cabourg, northwest of Caen .

The rains were accompanied by hail in Île-de-France where the mercury fell by 8 degrees in 24 hours. This Monday morning, 30 departments were placed by Météo France on yellow alert for a risk of thunderstorms. The east of the country, as well as the southwest and some departments in the southeast are affected.
