This Sunday, May 12, in a residential building, Lilya, 8 years old, and her little brother Simao, 3 years old, peacefully have their snack in front of the television. It’s hard to imagine that these children experienced a tragedy on the night of Friday May 3 to Saturday May 4, in their house in Lagord, rue de Blois, where they were born and raised. Around 1 a.m., a fire broke out in the villa. In twelve minutes, the entire roof was on fire.

“Simao had a nightmare, he came to bed between us,” says mother Julie Luzio. Her husband, David, has been suffering from Charcot’s disease for a year. It is impossible for him to move, to speak. It is he who first wakes up and sees the flames on the ceiling in his daughter’s bedroom. Terrible helplessness, he can do nothing, neither shake his wife, nor scream. He manages to wake Simao from sleep and makes him understand that he must wake up his mother. The little boy complies, saving the whole family.

The roof caught fire within twelve minutes.

Two houses destroyed

“The smell immediately hit my nose and this noise… We could hear the crackling of the frame which was burning,” remembers Julie Luzio. The young mother jumps out of bed. “Simao didn’t want to go out without her shoes, Lilya was afraid outside because there was no street lighting. A friend of hers was sleeping at our house that evening, she was paralyzed. I rushed everyone a little,” she smiles now. Without losing her composure, Julie evacuates the entire home in the rain, in her “nightgown”. At 1:44 a.m., she alerted the firefighters and sent her children to ring the house bells.

The house was completely destroyed. The fire spread to the neighboring house which was also damaged.

“We lost everything. I’m thinking about my wedding dress, the children’s baptism dresses…”

It is already too late, the entire 130 square meter building is engulfed in flames. The fire spread and also destroyed the neighboring house where an 81-year-old woman lived. Everyone is safe and sound. “I wonder what would have happened if Simao hadn’t had a nightmare and if he hadn’t slept with us…” sighs Julie Luzio. The mother was unable to save anything from the fire. “We lost everything. These are sentimental things. I think of my wedding dress, the children’s baptism dresses…” On the scene, everything is just a pile of burnt beams and rubble.

According to the expert, the fire broke out in the VMC system.

A pot to help them

The drama that the Luzio family went through left no one indifferent. “The elected official of the City of Lagord stayed with us all night. Jean-Claude, from the neighborhood committee, comes to see us every two days. » They were urgently rehoused in a house intended for seasonal rental belonging to neighbors. The firefighters returned to look for some jewelry in the rubble and Simao’s cuddly toy, miraculously intact. “But he doesn’t want it anymore, he’s afraid it will get hot. »

The parents of the students, Lilya’s leisure center, her music school, colleagues and doctors at the La Rochelle hospital where Julie Luzio is a nursing assistant, everyone made their small contribution. A fundraiser has been put online to help the family. It has already reached more than 8,000 euros. “They brought us clothes, toys. It touches us enormously,” thanks the mother, moved, who supports the whole family at arm’s length. Since the disaster, she has been supported by her sister Laurie who came to take care of David and the children to relieve her. “The expert told us that the fire would have started in the VMC system.” If everything needs to be rebuilt, they are rich in a tremendous surge of solidarity.
