As part of the celebration of International Argan Tree Day, the Minister also chaired the official opening of the 7th edition of the International Argan Congress which is held in Essaouira from May 10 to 12, 2024 under the theme: “the argan tree in the face of climate change”, underlining the urgency of acting to preserve this precious ecosystem in a context of unprecedented climatic upheavals.

Fruit of the collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and the Argan Tree (ANDZOA), as well as the Institute National Agronomic Research (INRA), this congress has brought together, since 2011, the national and international scientific community to promote sustainable and inclusive development of the Argan industry.

Imbued with a sustainable prospective vision, the International Argan Tree Congress aspires, beyond sharing the achievements of scientific research, to highlight the Argan tree as a lever for development. It also aims to propose innovations that meet future requirements while addressing the measures and precautions necessary to promote the sustainable use of the resources of the Arganeraie biosphere.

An inaugural conference, under the theme: “Impact of climate change on the Argan tree and the Argan ecosystem: scientific evidence and strategic implication” brought together internationally renowned experts and leading researchers, providing a platform exchanges and reflections on current challenges and innovative solutions to preserve the Argan tree.

As part of the Congress, conferences, debates and round tables will be organized around essential subjects such as resource conservation and ecosystem management, Argan tree reproduction technologies, innovation and technological applications in the promotion of Argan products, as well as local knowledge and cultural practices of the Argan grove. These sessions will deepen knowledge and explore innovative solutions to meet the challenges posed by climate change to the Argan tree and its region.

During these three days, the congress will be the site of intense scientific activity, with the presentation of more than 120 communications divided into four thematic axes. Plenary sessions, scientific presentations, as well as satellite events, such as the Young Researchers Prize, will enrich discussions and promote synergies between participants.

Note that the congress has already aroused keen interest from the scientific community, with a call for papers launched on January 17, 2024. The results of the evaluation by the scientific committee were communicated on March 25, 2024, opening the path to finalizing the summaries before publication of the conference proceedings on July 31, 2024.

At the same time, the select committee initiated the call for Young Researchers Prizes between January 15 and April 15, highlighting the importance given to the next generation of scientists in the field of Argan. The results of this Prize will be revealed at the congress on May 10, 2024, symbolizing the commitment to promoting research and innovation.

This 7th edition of the International Argane Congress promises to be an unmissable event for all those involved in the preservation and enhancement of this unique ecosystem.
