Giro. Tour of Italy – Olav Kooij: “It was the milestone I wanted to achieve”

There it is, the first victory ofOlav Kooij on a Grand Tour! Among the young sprinters in the peloton, he is undoubtedly the most anticipated. And after 32 victories acquired among professionals, the 22-year-old Dutchman finally had the right to participate in a Grand Tour with the Visma | Lease a Bike. And Kooij directly capitalized, by taking the 9th stage of this Tour of Italy. Perfectly placed in the wheel Jonathan Milan (Lidl-trek) at the start of the sprint, the Dutchman fought a hell of a battle with the Italian, but it’s good Kooij who was the fastest in the last 200 meters, as he was ahead of Milan half a wheel on the line.

Olav Kooij, winner of this 9th stage of the Giro!

“Normally, with Christophe Laporte…”

“We really wanted to have a stage victory. The first two sprints didn’t go very well. Today, we really had to fight, because the final was very difficult. The team did a great job to put myself in a good position and I managed to win.”declares Kooij at the arrival.

“We had to improvise a bit, especially in the last kilometer. Normally, with Christophe (Laporte), we are almost certain to put me in a good position. But there, we didn’t necessarily have a precise plan, we had to adapt to racing scenarios”he continues. “It was the milestone I wanted to achieve. I really wanted to have a victory on my first Grand Tour, after already a good number of successes. I dreamed of this one.”
