Forest fires in Canada: evacuations in progress – 1 p.m. news

It’s a story that seems endless. Canadians are forced to flee the flames and thick smoke. We are in British Columbia around Fort Nelson, where almost 3,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. “For the moment, it’s okay. We had to pump for almost twelve hours and use millions, millions of tons of water. We watered all our buildings,” confides a resident. Gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour fanned the flames and complicated the work of firefighters. Several cities have experienced record temperatures for the month of May, and the authorities are trying to reassure residents, like here in Alberta. On this map, we can observe the hundreds of fires and smoke which are progressing mainly in northwest Canada. The winter did not completely extinguish the numerous outbreaks which had developed in 2023. Hundreds of French firefighters came to lend a hand, like those from Montpellier. The Canadian government describes these conditions as “extreme drought” and is worried about the coming summer. TF1 | Report Y. Hovine
