We will put this down to excitement. A few minutes after being named the big winner of theEurovision, this Saturday May 11, Nemo broke the glass trophy that the Swedish Loreen – winner of the 2023 edition – had just given him. The non-binary Swiss artist was parading with the microphone-shaped trophy on the stage of the Malmö arena when he wanted to greet fans by getting down on one knee. When he got up, part of the trophy remained on the ground, broken. The interpreter of The Code remained speechless for a few seconds before accepting the flowers that production gave him. Later, at a press conference, the artist laughed about this incident by emphasizing, in reference to the lyrics of his song: “I not only broke the code, I also broke the trophy.” According to his own words, another trophy, intact, has already been given to him.

Nemo was well ahead of the other candidates in the general classification

Favorite before the start of the final, Nemo was given second place by the bookmakers who thought they would see the Croatian Baby Lasagna triumph. This was without counting on the jurors from the 37 member countries of the European Broadcasting Union, which oversees the competition, who voted overwhelmingly for Nemo’s performance. The artist received an avalanche of 12 points during the competition. At the end of the jury vote, Slimane was close behind him in second place in the general classification. The public vote could have changed everything for Nemo. But we must believe that the Swiss were unanimous. He won with 591 points, compared to 547 for Croatia, which finished second.

Nemo succeeds Celine Dion

This is the first time that Switzerland has won theEurovision since 1988. Nemo therefore succeeds Céline Dion and his title Do not go without me. A strong symbol and intense pride for the Swiss artist who mixes rap and lyrical inspirations in his songs. His title The Code, which remained in the heads of all viewers, this Saturday, May 11, evokes a very personal subject: the non-binary identity of Nemo. During the parade with the national flags, the artist also had the non-binary flag – four horizontal stripes of yellow, white, purple and black. After his victory, Nemo spoke to convey a message of peace: “I hope this competition can continue to encourage peace and dignity for everyone.”
