Indonesia: at least 11 dead, including nine students, in school bus accident

At least 11 people, including nine teenagers, died and dozens were injured in a crash involving a school bus carrying students on the Indonesian island of Java, police reported Sunday.

The accident, which occurred on Saturday at 6:48 p.m. local time (11:48 a.m. GMT) between the towns of Depok and Lembang, in the west of the island, left 13 seriously injured and 40 lightly injured, explained to AFP Jules Abraham Abast, spokesperson for the West Java Police.

The vehicle, with more than 60 students and teachers on board, suddenly veered to the left, hitting a car and three motorcycles. “Among the passengers who died, nine were students and one was a teacher,” he added, specifying that the eleventh dead was one of the motorcyclists.

The students were on a trip to celebrate their graduation.

Mr. Abast said the police were investigating the causes of the tragedy. A local police chief, Undang Syarif Hidayat, told Kompas television that he suspected a malfunction in the school bus’s brakes.

Deadly accidents are common in Indonesia, where many vehicles are old and/or poorly maintained and traffic laws are regularly ignored by users.

In early April, at least 12 people were killed in a collision involving a bus and two cars on the same island of Java.
