A rare phenomenon affected France during the night from Friday to Saturday: northern lights were observed in the four corners of the country, from Alsace to the Pyrénées-Orientales.

There Lorraine was not left out. Did you miss the phenomenon? Don’t panic, it’s bound to happen again during the night from Saturday to Sunday.

Northern Lights: the phenomenon should happen again this night in Lorraine

Indeed, according to Roger Hellotpresident of the federation of associations of amateur astronomers of Alsace, “it is very likely that new northern lights will be observable from the north of France next night”. ” There is a little more chance of seeing them in Lorraine than in Alsace,” adds the specialist, before tempering:

We should not rejoice too quickly, however. Already, the phenomenon should be less spectacular than that observed last night. Then, it is unlikely that you will be able to observe the shades of colors that are usually observed in Norway. In this region [la Lorraine ou l’Alsace, NDLR], the sky should be excessively reddish, even sometimes flamboyant. But green or orange reflections will be rare, unless you are in the countryside.

Solar cycle

Mr. Hellot recalls that the northern lights observed since last night are due to a “very particular and very intense activity of the sun at this momentwhich is expected to peak next year, with 2025 being the culmination of an 11-year solar cycle.”

Recently, we observed the appearance of a very very large sunspot, which corresponds to a zone of activity which has the effect of causing ejections of matter, in particular gas or hydrogen, but also particles that we call it solar wind. These particles are heading in particular towards the Earth. Fortunately, we have a magnetic belt that protects the Earth from these particles so that they do not flow directly into the atmosphere. When these particles encounter the atmosphere of the north or south poles, they become luminous and cause these beautiful northern lights. The light can be seen from France if the phenomenon is particularly violent.

Other episodes to watch for between now and 2025

Since the peak of this solar activity is expected for 2025, we should expect the phenomenon of aurora borealis reproduces “widely this year as well as next year”.

“It is not excluded that we will still have 2-3 other episodes this year,” Mr. Hellot projects.
