Drunk driving and speed – A motorist causes a fatal accident on Highway 55 in Trois-Rivières

Yesterday evening, around 11 p.m., Highway 55 at km 196 was the scene of a fatal accident.

The collision involved two vehicles.

According to information collected by the Sûreté du Québec, a vehicle (intermediate category automobile) which was traveling northbound at high speed collided with another vehicle which was traveling in the same direction.

Following the impact, the vehicle (small automobile) that was struck left the road. The driver of this vehicle, a 24-year-old woman, suffered significant injuries. She was transported to the hospital where she was unfortunately pronounced dead. She was alone in her car.

Offending driver arrested

The SQ indicated that the driver of the other vehicle, a 47-year-old man from Shawinigan, suffered minor injuries that were not life-threatening. He was not transported to the hospital. He was also alone in his vehicle.

He was arrested by police for driving while impaired by alcohol causing death as well as dangerous driving causing death. At the station, he failed the breathalyzer test (almost twice the legal limit). He remains detained and will appear today at the Shawinigan courthouse.

Highway 55 North was reopened at 7:30 a.m. this morning.
