Investigations are continuing to determine the causes of the explosion at a residence on rue des Fléneaux in Puilboreau, near La Rochelle. Wednesday May 8, at 4:30 a.m., a major explosion blew out the building with around forty tenants inside. Only a 56-year-old man, occupant of the apartment where the incident occurred, was seriously injured. Suspended in the air by his foot when the firefighters arrived, he was amputated on the spot by a surgeon called urgently, then airlifted to the Poitiers hospital. This Thursday, May 9, he was transferred to Bordeaux for continued treatment.

The investigation opened into involuntary destruction of the property of others by violation of an obligation of prudence and safety is only just beginning. The investigations will focus on the gas meters to check if there was excessive consumption in the hours preceding the explosion and if it was isolated or included the entire building. Because the question still arises of a possible suicide attempt. The fifty-year-old lived alone and suffered from his isolation. The hearing, which has not yet taken place, will certainly provide some answers to the investigators.

Rehousing

According to our information, no gas cylinder was found in the fifty-year-old’s apartment. The building is still being cleared, an immense task considering the damage following the explosion. On Wednesday May 8, in the evening, seven people were able to be rehoused by the lessor Domofrance and the town of Puilboreau. The rest of the tenants had found accommodation with relatives. They are prohibited from entering their apartment until further notice.
