A majority of Israelis think it is time to end the war between Israel and Hamas, according to a recent poll by the Israel Democracy Institute.
About 53% of the total sample, 45% of Jews and 93% of Arabs think it is time to end the war, according to the poll, while 43% of Jews, 5% of Arabs and 36% of the total sample think it is not time to end the war.
Asked the main reason the war should be stopped, 53% of Israelis said it should be stopped because its “continuation endangers the hostages.” Fifty-six percent of Jews and 45% of Arabs said the hostages were the main reason to end the war.
The second largest group, 16%, said the war should be stopped to allow Israeli leaders and the military to focus their attention on the northern front.
Fifteen percent of Jews and 11 percent of Arabs said the war should be stopped because “the fighting has already achieved most possible results.”
Monday’s poll also examined what the country thought was the “main objective” of the war when asked to choose between the return of the hostages and the overthrow of Hamas. About 77 percent of Israelis said returning the hostages should be the first priority, while only 12 percent said overthrowing Hamas should be the first priority.
The number of those who chose the return of the hostages as their first priority over the overthrow of Hamas has steadily increased since January, when 47% chose the return of the hostages and 42% said that the overthrow of Hamas was the most important.
