The Beninese President confirms the ban on the shipment of Nigerien oil

Beninese President Patrice Talon announced on Wednesday May 8 the decision to prohibit the shipment of Nigerien oil via the Sèmè Kpodji platform. In a brief statement, he expressed regret over the difficult relations between the two countries and stressed his wish to see them normalize.

Talon confirmed that he took this decision following the lack of response from Nigerien authorities to his efforts to ease tensions and normalize bilateral relations. He recalled the various initiatives undertaken, such as opening the borders on the Beninese side and sending diplomatic messages, including sending his Minister of Foreign Affairs to Niamey as an emissary.

President Talon insisted on the importance of conducting exchanges between countries in a formal and structured manner, criticizing what he considers to be informal practices, particularly in reference to the arrival of Nigerien officials in Benin for the inauguration of the pipeline, of which he was informed by Chinese sources.

He also highlighted that significant quantities of Beninese cereals enter Niger informally, and said Benin cannot be seen as an enemy while hoping for collaboration and support.

To lift the ban, Talon set clear conditions, including the collaboration of Niamey, the reopening of land borders and the restoration of bilateral relations.

President Talon expressed his sorrow over the tensions between the two countries and described as ridiculous the allegations that Benin had massed foreign troops on its borders to attack Niger.
