According to Dares, the basic monthly salary of all employees increased by 1.3% during the first quarter of 2024. An increase over one year which stands at 3.3% while inflation does not increased by only 2.1%.

Over one year, it increased by 3.3%, significantly more than inflation which , it is slowing down since it only increased by 2.1% year-on-year in March.

This represents a gain of 1.2% for purchasing power. It is even more in reality since this basic monthly salary does not take into account any bonuses received by employees or overtime.

Furthermore, all types of profession recorded an increase in their standard of living. The surge in prices that began in 2021 had undermined the purchasing power of employees for eight consecutive quarters.

The French have started spending again

Everyone is now in the green. Over one year, it is the category of workers who recorded the largest gain in purchasing power of their basic monthly salary with an average increase of 1.7% compared to 1.3% for employees, 0. 9% for intermediate professions and 0.7% for executives.

An evolution of wages that we find in the consumption figures, since during the first three of the year, the French started spending again. It was food spending that rebounded the strongest with the easing of budget constraints, after several months of deprivation, while it remained very reasonable on automobiles, IT and clothing…
