PSG misses out: Borussia Dortmund wins at the Parc and qualifies for the C1 final

Too borrowed for more than an hour, PSG conceded a goal from Mats Hummels and was unable to break through the wall erected by Borussia Dortmund (1-0). Beaten on the outward and return legs, the French champion will not go to Wembley, logically based on the nature of the two matches.

THE PSG hit the posts 6 times during this Champions League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund. Despite this improbable statistic, the French champion gave the impression of having completely missed his meeting. As in the first leg, BVB won 1-0 and fully deserved their qualification for the final. The very definition of a (pseudo) poisoned gift.

Ramos, surprise of Luis Enrique’s XI

Luis Enrique decided to innovate in attack for this historic meeting. Regularly starting in the Champions League, Bradley Barcola was replaced at kick-off for Gonçalo Ramos, authentic striker. The Asturian’s desire was to fix the hinge Mats HummelsNico Schlotterbeck to free up space for Kylian Mbappé to the left and Ousmane Dembélé to the right. A calculated risk (he has scored 8 goals in Ligue 1 since February 10) but still surprising since the Portuguese had only started in C1 once this season, against Newcastleduring a scathing defeat at Saint James’ Park (4-1) on October 4 and his last participation in the competition consisted of an entry into play in the 85th minute during the quarter-final first leg against FC Barcelona (2-3). Edin Terzicon the other hand, brought back the same XI as on the first leg.

45 minutes wasted

In an incandescent Parc des Princes, PSG wanted to take possession of the ball against BVB in a waiting position with a low block. On a first movement on the right side, Achraf Hakimi found Ramos who was able to cut the trajectory but with the tip of his foot (4th). The Moroccan had a new center to negotiate: he ended up in the gloves of Gregor Kobel but the indication was already there. Dembélé pressed in turn. After a poorly pushed corner by Marcel SabitzerMbappé volleyed without enough force to worry Kobel (7th).

The Parisian pressing worked perfectly and Borussia could not get out of their camp. However, after Gigio Donnarumma had to clear a hot ball into touch, Niclas Fullkrug could serve as a pivot for Karim Adeyemi who saw his recovery blocked (12th). Ramos responded immediately with a nice sequence but his shot flew off target (13th).

The BVB throw-ins bothered the Parisians: Füllkrug once again relied on Lucas Beraldo to find Julian Ryerson behind but the Norwegian’s half-volley found the small net (19th).

Very behind since the start of the match and guilty of several missed checks, Mbappé was finally able to find speed on the left to fix and transmit to Vitinha who served Dembélé. Between the center and the shot, the Mosquito chose the second option but shot far too high (31st). This initiative had the merit of reviving PSG, which was very hesitant for around ten minutes. A few moments later, Dembélé chose to cross but Ramos was waiting for the ball behind (32nd).

The forcing continued but, after a saving intervention from Hummels in front of Mbappé, Adeyemi went on the counter, resisted the return of Warren Zaire-Emery to strike from the left and Donnarumma made an exceptional save to deflect the left winger’s attempt (35th).

PSG was a little short of ideas, so Vitinha tried from afar, directly on Kobel (42nd). On a big recovery error from Adeyemi, Mbappé on the right side, served Fabian Ruiz behind: the Spaniard’s shot, blocked by Schlotterbeck, ended up in a corner but had the merit of reviving the atmosphere (45th).

Hummels shower the Park

PSG only had one half left to come back to score. So the French champion accelerated immediately. Hakimi pushed Ryerson deflected for a corner. Continuing, Mbappé crossed for Ramos who deflected with the tip of his foot and Zaire-Emery, at the far post and at point blank range found… the outside of the post (47th).

Moments later, Adeyemi had a duel to play with Marquinhos. The captain missed his throw on Donnarumma. On the corner, Julian Brandt found the head of Hummels, alone to smash the ball into the back of the net and open the scoring for the BVB (51st).

Terzic made a first change by bringing in Marco Reus in place of Adeyemi (56th). The false rhythm worked perfectly for the Germans. Well placed between the lines, Vitinha was able to serve Ramos in the area but his recovery flew away (61st). The threat was getting closer and Nuno Mendes, 20 meters away,… found the post in turn (62nd). The Portuguese then offered Ramos a caviar but his compatriot missed his shot.

Barcola and Marco Asensio then entered, while Ramos and Ruiz left (64th). After more than an hour in a semi-lethargic state, PSG was finally in their match. Dembélé thought he got a penalty after a devastating hook but Daniele Orsato changed his mind after a tackle from Hummels on the edge of the area. Asensio completely missed his free kick which did not rise (66th).

Guilty of unnecessary tricks which led to a Parisian counterattack and a yellow card for Sabitzer, Jadon Sanchomuch less visible than on the way out, was replaced by Niklas Süle to strengthen its defensive base (68th).

The amounts are with Borussia

Most of the initiatives started from Dembélé now. After a tackle from the Parisian number 10, PSG had a good counter ball with Barcola but Hummels intervened and, on the second ball, Mbappé wanted to roll in from the right but completely missed his shot (74th). Frustrated, Dembélé took a logical yellow for a very limited tackle on Schlottenberg.

Kang-In Lee replaced Zaire-Emery for the last quarter of an hour (76th). After obtaining a corner, Brandt struck out and after a header from Füllkrug, Hummels scored but he was clearly offside (77th). The sign that the Parisians were still alive? Borussia was cowering in front of their cage and holding on. Hakimi was finally able to find Mbappé in depth but Kobel diverted for a corner (80th). After a foul from Schlotterbeck, Lee took a free kick to the far post for Marquinhos but the Brazilian, who had got the better of Hummels, did not hit the target (83rd). After Dembélé, it was Hakimi who took out his nerves on Schlotterbeck and collected an orange-yellow (84th). Felix Nmecha replaced Brandt.

But definitely, the amounts were with Borussia. After a new incursion from the right, Kobel wanted to push back in disaster… on Mbappé who found the top of the crossbar after the Swiss goalkeeper deflected the trajectory with the tip of the glove (87th). Then it was Vitinha who delivered an unstoppable long shot… except for the crossbar (88th)! Lee tried in turn, without hitting the target (89th).

In stoppage time, Mbappé hoped to obtain a penalty after a duel with Schlottenbeck, without success (90th + 1). It was the last possibility of an unlucky PSG, certainly, but who simply did not know how to get up to the level of the event or, at least, much too late.
