These are the deadliest floods that Bosnia and Herzegovina has experienced in recent years. Friday October 4, torrential rains hit the center of the country, causing flooding and a landslide, but also the destruction of numerous roads and houses. According to a provisional report from Reuters, at least 21 people have lost their lives and more than a hundred residents are missing.

Edin Forto, the Minister of Transport of the Bosnian-Croatian Federation, warned that the situation in the affected areas was critical. “The flash flood destroyed entire houses, as well as concrete slabs and foundations, and washed them away… I have never seen anything like this,” he said.

These floods follow an unprecedented summer drought which caused the drying up of many rivers and lakes, and affected agriculture and the water supply of urban areas in the Balkans and much of Europe. Extreme weather changes that can be attributed to climate change.

These are the worst floods in Bosnia since at least 2014, when more than 20 people died in floods.
