Day of free distribution of compost and tree shoots in Beauharnois

With the return of spring, gardeners and landscape maintenance enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that free compost distribution is back this year in Beauharnois. This initiative is a way for the municipality to thank the population for their excellent participation in the collection of organic materials since the implementation of the brown bin.

The distribution will take place at the back of the André-Richard arena, located at 866, boulevard Cadieux, on Sunday, May 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or while stocks last. Interested citizens will need to bring their own shovels and containers and will only be allowed to fill a maximum of 2 hand-held containers (boiler, bag or box) per person. Distribution will be carried out on a “first come, first served” basis.

Compost is an organic material that offers many benefits for soils. It allows in particular:

– Prolonged intake of nutrients;

– Better penetration and retention of rainwater and fertilizing elements, depending on soil types;

– Improved structure and ventilation;

– Optimal root growth.

Novelty

The City will simultaneously distribute free tree seedlings to all interested citizens. The varieties available and their quantities may vary. In Quebec, in May, we celebrate Tree and Forest Month. Many activities promoting trees, forests and their benefits take place throughout the province.

Planting guide

Even if your sprout is small, it will grow big one day. It is crucial to provide adequate space for future growth. Carefully ensure that its branches and roots do not cause any damage to infrastructure, buildings, or disturb neighbors. It is therefore recommended to:

– Leave at least 2 m distance between the tree and its neighbor’s land (fence);

– Leave at least 2 m distance between the tree and the service entrance (water man);

– Do not plant a tree near a fire hydrant (2 m distance);

– Do not plant the tree in the municipal right-of-way (1 m distance).

The City of Beauharnois encourages all gardeners and landscape maintenance enthusiasts to take advantage of this unique opportunity to improve the quality of their soil and grow beautiful plants and flowers.
