Laeken Castle, located north of Brussels, today serves as the residence of the Belgian king and queen. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, parents of four children, now live there with their youngest daughter, Princess Éléonore, who is the last to complete her secondary education. Princess Elisabeth, heir to the throne, has been studying at Harvard in the United States for a few weeks, and Prince Gabriel is in his third year at the Royal Military Academy.

Laeken Castle was built between 1782 and 1784 for the governors general of the Austrian Netherlands, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen and his wife, Archduchess Marie-Christine of Austria, on what was then called the Schoonenberg estate, in the countryside north of Brussels. The first king of the Belgians, Leopold I, made it his residence. His son, Leopold II, ordered his architect Alphonse Balat to build a greenhouse complex next to Laeken Castle. After the terrible New Year’s fire of 1890, Leopold II had the castle enlarged. The complex includes the Congo Greenhouse, the Theater Greenhouse, which adjoins the orangery, and the Winter Garden.
