Moroccan government to provide financial support to people affected by floods in southeast

Recent floods have wreaked havoc in the southeastern regions of Morocco. Efforts to rehabilitate roads, communications networks, electricity and drinking water are crucial in the first months.

Faced with this situation, the Moroccan government granted financial aid of 80,000 dirhams and 140,000 dirhams for the repair of 1,121 collapsed houses. These resources will be paid into the National Fund.

This aid plan is part of the order given by the king from Morocco to the Moroccan government to launch a program to rebuild areas damaged by heavy rains in several provinces in the south-east of the country, with a budget of 2.5 billion dirhams.

So far, the aid has been granted by local administrations until their approval, with the aim of showing support from the beginning, as confirmed by government spokesperson Mustafa Baytas.

Nonetheless, the forum called on the government to oversee the rehabilitation of oases and compensate farmers, due to the importance of oases in irrigation systems. A damaged oasis can render the water unusable because it may contain substances that do not allow the sale of the grown products.

Furthermore, the importance of implementing development programs in flood-affected regions, which have been neglected for a long time, was mentioned, with the aim of improving the economic and social stability of families. In response to this situation, the executive introduced natural disaster insurance into legislation.

This situation was exacerbated last year by several large-scale natural disasters, such as the earthquakes that occurred between September 8 and 14 in Al-Haouz, which claimed the lives of more than 2,900 people, or last month’s floods in the southeast of the country, which killed 198 people.

According to the law, victims of these events must be registered in order to receive compensation. To speed up the process, lawmakers asked the government for a report on the damage caused by the floods, as well as a detailed report on the measures to be taken to repair them within the stipulated time.
