the price of the subscription will soar by 120%

An already expensive subscription, which is far from covering the operating costs of the American company. So act: it will (strongly) increase.

An increase which nevertheless promises to be progressive, but which, according to the New York Timescould reach up to $44 per month in the United States by 2029. An increase of 120% from the current rate of $20 per month.

Successive price increases

Launched in February 2023, the ChatGPT Plus subscription provides access to the most advanced version of the OpenAI language model and the most innovative features, such as the recently launched ChatGPT Voice. Offered at $20 per month, it paved the way for the competition which has since offered a similar subscription (Google Gemini Advanced comes to mind).

Still, that’s not enough for the American company, which has only just begun its transition into a truly for-profit company. According to recent financial reports, OpenAI continues to lose (a lot) of money and is struggling to stay afloat despite significant fundraising in which giants like Microsoft are participating.

According to the New York TimesChatGPT Plus will therefore gradually see its price climb, climb, climb… until doubling by 2029. At the end of 2024, the price should already rise to $22, assures the American newspaper.

OpenAI loses (a lot) of money

This information, the New York Times recovered them from documents intended for potential investors. A way to reassure them about future results, and to hide the fact that today, the company’s finances are not in good shape.

Artificial intelligence has become a real race and OpenAI is spending lavishly to remain the leader. The accounts are not very good for the company, which hopes to earn around 3.7 billion dollars this year (including 2.7 billion thanks to subscriptions), while it estimates having spent 7 billion.

However, the documentation reserved for investors is not stingy with promises. OpenAI hopes to reach $11.6 billion in revenue as early as next year and up to $100 billion within five years. A horizon which therefore aligns perfectly with the possibility of a subscription at a price multiplied by two.
