The national public health agency has also just published a study on the Normans and alcohol. A review of consumption in 2021 and visits to emergency rooms in 2023.

According to the report, 7.8% of adults aged 18-75 say they drink alcohol every day. A stable trend since 2017 and in line with the national average (8%). Among women, daily alcohol consumption is decreasing: 3.2% in 2017 compared to 2.4% in 2021.

There is also significant occasional alcohol use (API). The report indicates that 16% of Normans aged 18 to 75 consume six drinks or more, once a month or more. This proportion is not significantly different from that of the national level (16.5%).

The figure is, however, higher for those aged 18 to 30, which is 27%.

These excessive consumptions sometimes lead to emergency departments. There is a recording of entries directly linked to alcohol. There were 11,083 in 2017 and a little more in 2023: 11,645.

In Manche, Orne and Calvados, entries are more numerous than in Seine-Maritime and Eure.

Acute alcoholic intoxication was the most represented among the different pathologies that could be identified as directly linked to alcohol (63.5% of emergency room visits directly linked to alcohol).

“On daily consumption of alcohol, we will see that it is more the over 60s and people who have levels of education less than or equal to the Baccalaureate, while for exceeding the benchmarks, we will see that that rather affects all age categories, especially adults, and the wealthiest people with higher levels of education as well”, explains Mélanie Martel, epidemiologist, head of the Normandy “Public Health France” team.
