The government is keeping its promise. From 1er July, supermarkets will have the obligation to inform consumers in the event of “shrinkflation”, according to a decree published in the Official Journal this Saturday, May 4.

Distributors will now be forced to display “ on the packaging or on a label attached to or placed near the product, in a visible manner [et] legible ” a mention for products which have lost quantity but whose price has not decreased.

“Although authorized, commercial practices having the effect, in different ways, of masking the reduction in quantity (weight or volume) of certain products, while at the same time their prices were maintained or even increased, were the subject of strong criticism »the Ministry of the Economy declared in a press release in mid-April.

Only foodstuffs and non-food products which are marketed in a constant quantity (weight, volume) are concerned.

“Breaches of the provisions of this decree, taken pursuant to article L. 112-1 of the Consumer Code, will be punishable by an administrative fine the amount of which may reach 3,000 euros for an individual and 15,000 euros for a legal entity »specifies the decree.
