After a quick procession, the real start of this first stage was given. The 107th edition of the Giro has launched and several riders have attempted to take a first breakaway.

Six riders thus isolated themselves at the head of the race. Louis Barré (Arkéa – B&B Hotels), Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Nicolas Debeaumarché (Cofidis), Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (Lidl-Trek), Andréa Pietrobon (Team Polti Kometa), Filippo Fiorelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF- Faizanè) constituted this escape. The latter did not worry the peloton which left behind. They had a lead of 1m35 with 125 kilometers to go.

Pogacar’s team managed this gap which increased to 75 seconds, 25 kilometers further. The Team-Emirates team continued its work and let the gap grow to 2min 30 at 70 kilometers from the final race. The breakaway then broke up. Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier continued his effort alone before being joined by Lilian Calmejane. The duo had a lead of more than 3 minutes 50 kilometers from the end of this first stage.

The San Vito hill (1.4km at 9.8%) about thirty km from the finish shook things up a bit. Calmejane let go and let Ghebreigzabhier go alone… before finding him at the top. Behind, the peloton comes back very strongly and swallows up the chasing duo Pietrobon and Fiorelli. The gap is now only 1min 47.

It was finally at the top of Colle Maddalena that a large part of the peloton caught the day’s breakaways, under the leadership of UAE-Emirates. Only Calmejane still resists, enough to secure the blue jersey of best winner. But be careful for Pogacar because he lost several teammates and can only count on Rafal Majka 20 km from the finish. In the meantime, Romain Bardet and Luke Plapp have given up.

Calmejane’s solo ended at 10km, taken over by Caruso, Pellizzari, De Marchi, Baudin, Schachmann, Honoré and Conci. The eight men have a 25-second lead.

The final race began 4km from the finish with an attack from Pogacar. The Slovenian managed to catch up with Nicola Conci (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who tried his luck alone 7 kilometers from the finish. Narvaez and Schachmann managed to follow Pogacar’s wheel… while Conci let go.

In the sprint, Narvaez took advantage of Pogacar’s wheel to take the 11th victory of his career, the second this season after his success in the Ecuadorian championship. Behind the trio, Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step) came 6th and 7th among the pursuers
