Nepal has been affected by major forest fires in recent weeks. According to the “Everest Chronicle” magazine, more than 50 districts have already been ravaged by flames and 169 fires were recorded last week. In the Uttarakhand region, three Nepalese workers have died in the last 24 hours.

Several members of a group of Nepalese workers who worked at a pine resin factory in Syunrakot died after being caught in a forest fire near the factory. According to “The New Indian Express”, the workers, accompanied by their wives, tried to fight the fire. Two of them died trying to stop the fire, another died of his burns in hospital. Two other people are in critical condition.

Earlier in April, three soldiers died, also while trying to fight a fire. According to “Altitude News”, more than twenty people died in forest fires the previous month.

Questioned by “The Kathmandu Post” last week, the director general of the national disaster risk management authority declared: “we do not have adequate human resources, training and equipment to protect these forests from fires” .
