Europe in the spotlight on May 9 in Brussels

Every year, May 9 is commemorated in all the states of the European Union. This date marks the anniversary of the Robert Schuman Declaration in 1950, considered the birth certificate of the European Union.

Europe Day will be celebrated on Thursday May 9 in Brussels. This year, the festivities are taking place in a particular context: the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU is entering its home stretch and the European elections on June 9 are fast approaching.

In Brussels, the festivities will begin at the entrance to the Cinquantenaire park at 10:00 a.m. Tribute will be paid to Robert Schuman, former French Minister of Foreign Affairs and architect of European construction. A few kilometers away, the Manneken-Pis will put on its finest European costume, to the sound of a fanfare. From 11:00 a.m., citizens will be able to ask all their questions about Europe and the elections to the teams of the Representation of the European Commission in Belgium and the Liaison Office of the European Parliament, who will have a stand on Place Agora.

Another event: at 1:00 p.m., the carillons of the federal parliament and the Saints-Michel-et-Gudula Cathedral will play the European anthem in unison. This extract from the prelude to “The Ode to Joy” of Beethoven’s 9th symphony will also resonate at the same time in several other towns in Wallonia (Gembloux, Enghien, Verviers, Liège, Huy, Fosses-La Ville, Stavelot, Soignies, Wavre, Ath and Malmedy) and in Flanders (Termonde, Ghent , Sint-Niklaas, Leuven, Mol, Steenokkerzeel and Ypres). In the afternoon, the streets around the Grand-Place will be filled with musical entertainment and street artists.

The day will end at Ancienne Belgique, with a meeting-debate on the theme of music, in the presence of the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hadja Lahbib. It will be followed by a concert to celebrate the 10th edition of Liveurope’s celebration of Europe Day. The European flag will be raised at the Royal Palace, the Atomium and under the Cinquantenaire arches.
