Wednesday May 1 at the beginning of the afternoon, the inanimate body of a person – a man – was reported by a walker, floating on the waters of the Marne à la Saône canal, between locks 20 and 21, on the town of Chamarandes-Choignes, near Val-des-Escholiers.

Emergency services were called at 1:45 p.m. Around ten firefighters from Chaumont, as well as divers from Chaumont, Langres, and Saint-Dizier, went to the scene. They could only note the death of this man when they arrived on the site.

The investigation was entrusted to the Chaumont gendarmerie company, whose deputy company commander (Captain Mickaël Robert) was present on site. A criminal identification team carried out the usual findings. The man recovered was 45 years old. He lived in Chaumont.

This Thursday evening, the public prosecutor, Denis Devallois, confirmed what he had already suspected the day before. No particular suspicion surrounds this death. The man had left his home a few hours earlier. He was in poor health. Voluntary act or accident? Unfortunately, it will be difficult to tell.
