From October 1, 2024, many new features will impact the daily lives of French people. Revaluation of APL, increase in small pensions, and increase in gas prices are on the program. Find out what will change.

Like every start of the month, several measures will come into force on October 1st. While some provide relief for low-income households, others, such as the increase in gas prices, risk weighing on the budget.

The month of October 2024 marks the entry into force of new provisions which will directly impact the wallets of the French. Here’s an overview of the main changes.

APL revalued by 3.26%

Good news for beneficiaries of personalized housing assistance (APL). From October 1, this aid will be increased by 3.26% on average, following the Rent Reference Index (IRL) for the second quarter of 2024. This financial boost, although modest, will be automatically applied and registered as part of the annual reviews. The most precarious households, tenants in tense areas, should find relief from rental pressure.

Small pensions: a welcome increase

850,000 full-career retirees receiving small pensions will also benefit from an increase. On average, their pension will be increased by 50.94 euros per month, with some receiving up to 100 euros more. This increase aims to improve the purchasing power of low-income retirees, in a tense economic context marked by inflation.

Gas is on the rise again

On the bad news side, gas prices are starting to rise again after a temporary drop in September. The megawatt hour will increase from 130.21 euros to 137.20 euros, an increase of 5.37%. For households using gas for heating, cooking, or hot water, this increase will represent higher bills as winter approaches.

: new rules for SUVs and speed on the ring road

Parisian motorists will also have to adapt. The price of SUV parking in Paris will triple, as part of a policy aimed at reducing the space for these vehicles in the city. In addition, the speed limit on the Paris ring road will be lowered to 50 km/h. A transition period is planned until October 10 before the generalization of this measure, intended to reduce pollution.

Fight against telephone scams

On the security side of personal data, the government is toughening its tone. From October 1, operators will have to prevent the falsification of telephone numbers, a technique used by fraudsters to pose as bank advisors. This measure, resulting from the Naegelen law, aims to strengthen user confidence in telephone communications.

Vaccines and time change

The vaccination campaign against influenza and Covid-19 will begin on October 15, with priority given to people at risk. Furthermore, the transition to winter time will take place during the night of Saturday October 26 to Sunday October 27. Don’t forget to set your watches back one hour.
