Saturday May 11, the parents of Adrien Couffin, teacher and father who died in October 2022, will set 55 place settings on a black table at Place Jean-Jaurès in Bagnols.

The Justice for Road Victims collective is renewing its awareness-raising action. Saturday May 11, 55 place settings will be set on a table covered in black on Place Jean-Jaurès in Bagnols-sur-Cèze in tribute to the 55 people killed on the roads of Gard in 2023. “We want to reach as many people as possible, especially young people. We want to make them understand that it doesn’t just happen to others.” Evelyne and Bernard Couffin lost their son Adrien in October 2022 in a car accident. On board there were also Marion, Adrien’s wife, and their two children, Mathieu and Léa. “Our granddaughter was between life and death. She remained in a coma for five days. She had 11 fractures and a crushed knee which caused a slowdown in growth. She will have lifelong consequences. She lost her dad and almost lost her life When we see her in this state, it is unacceptable that the author is still at large.says Evelyne, very moved.

Creation of a local branch of the collective

The individual who hit the Couffin family’s car was speeding and under the influence of alcohol. “It’s been a year and a half since we lost our son and there is still no judgment. The individual is under judicial supervision!”. Victims’ families have been asking for several years for May 16 to become a national day dedicated to road victims. They also want the term “manslaughter” to be reclassified as “vehicular homicide.” A first step was taken since the National Assembly (on January 31) then the Senate (on March 29) voted for the bill creating road homicide when a fatal accident involves a driver under the influence of drugs or of alcohol. “We don’t want this to be an empty announcement, the perpetrators must be properly condemned,” comments the father.

Adrien Couffin’s parents will launch a local branch of the Justice collective for road victims. It will be effective from 1er January 2025. “The goal is to be able to help, advise and guide the families and friends of the victims.” Evelyne would also like to implement awareness-raising actions in middle and high schools. “If we can save even one life, that would be huge.”

“No one is ready to experience such a tragedy”

Christian Baume, deputy delegate for security at Bagnols, “congratulates families for raising awareness on this subject”. “There is a cursed cocktail: alcohol, drugs and speed. Those who consume it become traffic criminals and massacre families. We must come to our senses and condemn more severely.” “The car becomes a weapon and no one is ready to experience such a tragedyadds Evelyne Couffin. We live with ups and downs, every day is suffering. We say why us, why him. In the morning it’s a nightmare until you go to bed with medication. We know that until the end of our days we will never be happy again. We took life sentence. “
