Police said they attended The Birley Academy on Wednesday morning after being called to “an incident involving a sharp object at the school”.

Two adults were slightly injured and a child was also examined after being attacked. They were treated on site, their condition not requiring hospitalization, said the school, which closed for the rest of the day.

The teenager was arrested and taken into custody.

“All of our students and staff are safe,” the school said in a statement.

Reacting to the attack, Education Minister Gillian Keegan said she was “concerned”. “My thoughts are with the injured and the entire school community affected by this frightening situation,” she wrote on the social network X.

This new incident comes the day after the death of a 14-year-old boy attacked by a man armed with a sword in east London. Four people, including two members of the police, were injured.

The 36-year-old perpetrator of the attack was arrested and is still in hospital on Wednesday morning.

The police have ruled out the possibility of a terrorist act.

Stabbing attacks are on the rise in the United Kingdom, where mobilization is increasing to ask the government to act. According to official figures, they increased by 7% last year to almost 50,000 in England and Wales.

In London, they soared by 20% with 14,577 attacks recorded, returning to their level before the COVID-19 pandemic. Eighteen miners were killed last year.
