Before taking advantage of a week off, the Rouge et Or of University made sure to leave the head in peace. Glen Constantin’s protégés remained undefeated on Sunday at PEPS, posting a 34-10 victory over the Concordia Stingers.

In this 5th victory of the season, the defense was once again solid by causing three turnovers which provided ten points in addition to a safety touchdown.

If the Stingers’ series of defeats against the Rouge et Or continued, Brad Collinson’s protégés fought well after suffering a very disappointing defeat last Saturday against the McGill Redbirds.

In first place in the RSEQ, the Rouge et Or (5-0) will be off next weekend while the Stingers (1-4) will host the Vert & Or of the University of Sherbrooke in a decisive duel in the race to the playoffs.

Leading 21-9 after three quarters, the Rouge et Or sealed their victory by taking advantage of great runs from Kalenga Muganda and Jérémie Ouellette which led to the last touchdown, Ouellette’s second of the game and his 4th this season.

Great start in the 3rd quarter

The Stingers continued their momentum from the end of the first half by forcing a fumble on the kickoff. Stationed at the Rouge et Or 17 line, the visitors however had to settle for a placement.

Laval responded quickly. On the following series, Émeric scored his first career touchdown on a 65-yard pass and run.

Battle of defenses

Both teams’ defenses stole the show in the first quarter. Laval and Concordia only collected three first downs.

Back in the lineup after missing the last two games, Emile Choquet opened the scoring with a 17-yard field goal. A fumble covered by linebacker Christopher St-Hilaire placed the Rouge et Or inside the Stingers’ 20-yard line.

The two teams exchanged a field goal before the Red scored the first touchdown of the game. After an interception by Anton Haie in the center of the field, the offensive got underway. Two passes to Olivier Cool, a spectacular pass and run from Mathieu Roy led to Jérémie Ouellette’s touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

Record du RSEQ

On the last play of the first half, kicker Eric Maximuik set an RSEQ record with a 56-yard field goal to reduce the gap to seven points. Accomplished in the victory against Montreal on September 7, the previous mark of 53 yards belonged to Felipe Forteza of the Rouge et Or.
