At the Tableau Conference 2024 (April 29 to May 1, 2024), Tableau and Databricks are strengthening their strategic partnership by unveiling “Tableau Delta Sharing” and “Explore in Tableau”, two new features that aim to improve sharing, connecting and viewing data, more transparently and securely.

Analyze data collaboratively and securely

Databricks and the Linux Foundation developed Delta Sharing to provide an open and secure approach to data-driven sharing and collaboration on the open-Source protocol. It is in this spirit of sharing and collaboration that Tableau now includes the Tableau Delta Sharing connector. With this connector, businesses have powerful ability to share data seamlessly between Tableau and Databricks. -time data sharing also allows analytics to be updated quickly, helping teams collaborate better and make decisions based on the most recent information.

The added value of this connector lies in its ability to simplify data sharing and collaboration, allowing teams to work together more effectively.

Tableau Delta Sharing offers:

A powerful solution for sharing data between internal departments.
Strengthened collaboration with external partners and customers
Real-time data sharing between different platforms (avoiding data replication)
Optimization of data governance through centralized access management
The new connector leverages the power of Delta Lake, the open Source storage layer that helps create scalable, reliable, and high-performance data pipelines. Delta Lake builds on top of existing data lake systems, such as Azure Data Lake Storage and Amazon S3. It offers a set of transactional features that help ensure data integrity, simplify data pipelines, and improve data quality and reliability. Delta Lake includes many features, including ACID transactions, schema enforcement, delta caching, and data hop optimization. It integrates with Tableau data management features, including Tableau Prep, Tableau Catalog, and Tableau Server. These integrations enable end-to-end data management, sharing, and analysis.

The Tableau Delta Sharing connector is now available on Tableau Exchange, the marketplace for solutions integrated with Tableau technologies (accelerators, extensions, connectors).

Navigate oceans of data to find relevant information

75% of companies in the IT sector say they encounter difficulties in integrating information based on data relevant to decision-making into user experiences, according to the MuleSoft Connectivity Benchmark Report 2024. To this end, Tableau unveils Explore in Tableau, a new experience to navigate your data in a single click and discover information useful for decision-making.

In the past, customers had to manually download and upload data Source files. This made it more difficult to find relevant information and make decisions based on that information. Moving files between systems also compromises data governance practices because it becomes difficult to track and monitor file transfers and changes as they are copied between different machines.

Explore in Tableau makes it quick and easy to connect to relevant data sources in real time, without leaving your browser. No need to move files anymore, the analysis is instantaneous. And once new ideas are identified through data, they can be easily saved and shared with Tableau Cloud. If the experience is not successful, a single click allows you to go back in the data discovery journey. This ephemeral experience is unique and designed to be integrated into the workflow.

Explore in Tableau will be available in a pilot program in the coming months with general availability to follow.

The new Delta Sharing connector and Explore in Tableau functionality are the next step in the shared vision of Tableau and Databricks. Improvements have also been made to the Databricks SQL connector. Advanced authentication modes are now supported, as well as the OAuth framework and the ability to integrate your own identity provider. Additional SQL dialect and driver updates improved performance by 20%.

For further :

ACID Transactions: refers to four properties that ensure the integrity, consistency, isolation, and durability of data transactions in database management systems.
Tableau Prep: tool for cleaning, cross-referencing and organizing your data in order to adapt it to your needs
Tableau Catalog: Tableau’s data dictionary, providing an overview of data sources and their evolution, with access management ensuring reliable and consistent data.
Tableau Server: Sharing and collaboration platform for publishing your Tableau data viz and dashboards securely for others to view and use.
