DNA traces still unknown in the Dutroux case are at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) for comparison with traces found in the case linked to the 1993 disappearance of Tanja Groen, a Maastricht public prosecutor’s office said on Monday, confirming information published in the Dutch newspaper De Limburger.

The student disappeared on the night of August 31 to September 1, 1993 after a party during the initiation week of the Circumflex student association in Maastricht. Then aged 18, she went by bike to her room in Gronsveld, where she never arrived. All trace of her has since disappeared.

About two years ago, the Netherlands requested an investigation from Walloon justice to compare traces with the Dutroux affair. Unknown traces of DNA and hair were, among other things, found in Marc Dutroux’s homes and car. The cold case team wants to know if there is a connection between the two cases by comparing the clues. The spokesperson for the Maastricht public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the traces were transferred to the NFI in order to be inventoried.
