OTTAWA — Conservatives in Ottawa are demanding to consult the contracts linked to the six battery and electric vehicle factory projects in Ontario and Quebec, in order to verify what is planned to protect Canadian unionized workers.
The Conservatives planned to table a motion at a Commons committee meeting on Monday to request consultation of the contracts concluded with the manufacturers and the provisions which could concern the use of foreign workers in these new factories.
The Conservatives say the Liberals have failed to guarantee that all the jobs linked to these major projects will benefit Canadian workers.
Earlier this month, Canada’s Building Trades Unions called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to intervene, saying Canadian workers were being sidelined in favor of foreign workers at the NextStar battery plant in Windsor , in Ontario.
Mr. Trudeau and the executives of NextStar, which is owned by Stellantis and LG Energy Solution, deny these allegations.
Mr. Trudeau was scheduled to participate in an exchange Monday afternoon at the annual conference of the Canadian Building Trades Unions in Gatineau.
