Annecy: 5 films to see during the High Five Festival

Caside from the cinema, like every year, festival-goers are in for a treat! In total, the High Five offers some 70 films, chosen from over 300 candidates. Participating in one of these sessions means having the opportunity to discover the greatest international films on freeskiing, snowboarding, skating, mountain biking and climbing in preview. The films are spread over 19 sessions and in 4 different rooms. Here is a small selection of films not to be missed.

  • “Des équilibres” by Antoine Mesnage – Friday, September 27 – 9:15 p.m. session

A character walks on a wire, in the sky. Highliners take us into their strange, visually extreme practice. From line to line, we go from incomprehension to the opposite: concrete feelings, palpable physical and mental research. Within a team that nothing seems to stop, we share the search for balance through imbalance.

  • “The Hypocrite” by POW, Teton Gravity Research – Saturday, September 28 – 10:00 a.m. screening

The film “The Hypocrite” explores a critical discourse that resonates with individuals across diverse spheres. Set in the context of climate advocacy, the film examines the inherent contradiction between personal action and systemic efforts. The story is masterfully woven through the perspective of a professional skier, grappling with the complex interplay between advocacy for change and reliance on fossil fuels for athletic pursuits. The film aims to foster unity and collaboration within the outdoor community, transcending perceived hypocrisy and feelings of not belonging.

  • “Sources” by Astrid Cheylus – PVS Company – Saturday, September 28 – 12:45 p.m. screening

Astrid confronts her inner demons, revealing the fragility behind her athletic successes. Between breathtaking descents, Astrid battles psychological torment, seeking the balance between athletic glory and mental health. This film offers a poignant glimpse into Astrid’s personal quest to find her true victory.

  • “Trip Roulette Ep7” by Victor Daviet – Saturday September 28 – 9:30 p.m. screening

Victor invites his friend Nasima Zirak, an Afghan snowboarder and political refugee who recently arrived in , to live an adventure like no other to discover her region’s playground. For her, each stage will be a real first: a pedal boat crossing on Lake Annecy, an electric bike climb, first freeride line and a night camping under the stars.

  • “Our Air” by Mathieu Navillod and Dorothée Adam + conference (90min) – Sunday September 29 at 10:30 a.m.

Even in the most remote places in the Alps, the air we breathe is impacted by human activities. An air monitoring association has developed a unique device that allows air quality to be measured simply using a small sensor. This sensor has been entrusted to the only people capable of reaching inaccessible peaks, rising above known altitudes, and slipping into the deepest valleys. These people are the greatest French athletes in mountain disciplines: skiing, trail running, paragliding, mountaineering, etc.
