New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has been charged in a Manhattan federal prosecutor’s investigation into his 2021 election campaign financing, according to reports. The New York Times, which emphasizes that this is a first in the history of the city.

The grounds for the indictment will not be revealed until Thursday, September 26, by the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office. The charges brought against the mayor of the Big Apple “arise from a broad corruption investigation that began in 2021 into whether the mayor and his campaign conspired with the Turkish government that year to receive illegal foreign donations,” underlines the New York daily in a second article which details the main stages of the investigations carried out against the mayor.

In November 2023, the FBI had “seized Eric Adams’ cell phones and electronic devices and searched the home of a fundraiser for his campaign,” recalls the newspaper.

One of the investigations focuses on possible illegal donations to the Democratic mayor’s campaign by Turkish construction companies with ties to Ankara. Adams is suspected of pressuring New York City firefighters to allow the opening of the new building to house the Turkish consulate, despite their objections about the skyscraper’s safety.
