“All good things must come to an end.” This is how Raphaël Varane announced his retirement on Instagram this Wednesday. At 31, the 2018 world champion is ending a career marked by numerous titles, including four Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, but also serious injuries.

The latter forced the elegant central defender to say “stop”. Arriving this summer at Como, promoted to Serie A, Varane only played one Italian Cup match, on August 11 against Sampdoria, with the team coached by Cesc Fabregas. He had suffered a serious knee injury and came off after 22 minutes of play, the last ones.
International retirement after the 2022 World Cup
The Lille native, who has played for Lens, Madrid and Manchester United, was not on the list of players registered for the Italian championship, due to the seriousness of his injury.
Varane retired from the French team in January 2023, after the World Cup final in Qatar lost against Argentina (3-3, 2-4 on penalties), during his 93rd and final selection.
