Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ delay puts it in competition with Ghost of Yotei, but Ubisoft CEO says there’s room for both

With Assassin’s Creed Shadows being delayed to 2025, it now faces direct competition from Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima announced during Sony State of Play yesterday.

The choice begs a comparison between the two games, which are both set in feudal Japan and feature classic imagery of ninjas, samurai, and ronin. But despite these similarities, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes there’s plenty of room for two big open-world action-adventure games set in Japan.

“There’s a lot of room for really high-quality games, and these two games can sell very well,” Guillemot said.

As for what differentiates the two, Guillemot focused on the two protagonists of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which allow players to take control of either a ninja or a samurai.

“The goal is to make sure we deliver a fantastic experience with this dual-protagonist approach and two different and complementary gameplays… a setting set in feudal Japan should be really appealing,” he said.

Either way, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will face some stiff competition now that its release has been pushed back to February 2025, as it will be up against Avowed, Civilization VII, Monster Hunter Wilds, and a host of other big-name games. Indeed, 2025 is shaping up to be a very busy year in general thanks to the anticipated release of the Switch 2 and GTA VI.

In an attempt to give Assassin’s Creed Shadows a boost, Ubisoft is planning to release it on Steam on day one, which goes against its previous strategy. The game has also confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will include enhancements for the PS5 Pro.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on February 14 for PS5, Xbox, and PC, and you can read our preview here . As for Ghost of Yotei, we don’t have a release date yet, but we expect it to come out around the holidays. In the meantime, you can read about the best video games of 2024 here .
