Guinea has lost a light
It is with deep dismay that I learned of the death of architect Ibrahima Sory Touré, commonly known as “Watt”. His recall to God compels me to give a testimony about the man, the friend and the compatriot.
Ibrahima Sory Touré graduated from the Paris School of Architecture and was a very active member of the Association of Guinean Students in France (AE GF) in 1984 and
Member of the Committee for Reflection on Democracy in Guinea (CRDG) in 1990, of which the late Siradiou Diallo was the President.
On our return to Guinea, at the beginning of democratic multipartyism, he withdrew from politics to devote himself exclusively to his profession by opening his office and giving courses in Guinean universities.
Later, in my role as Ambassador and Director of State Protocol under the presidency of General Lansana Conté, and he in his capacity as coordinator of the private projects of the late general president, for 3 years, we met daily, including weekends and public holidays.
The collaboration was frank and cordial.
Nothing surprising; Alpha was noble. And in Soussou country, one does not proclaim one’s nobility, one lives it, practices it and lets others notice it.
Diminished by the illness that he managed for years with faith and courage, I saw my friend gradually leave, powerless before the divine will.
By giving up the soul in Guinea on our mother land, destiny wanted me to be in France where my friend and I met decades earlier. It is tragic not to have said goodbye to him, nor to say my goodbyes to him. I am devastated.
Knowing that my friend is no longer ill and is resting with his ancestors in his native moriah comforts me and eases my pain.
Ibrahima Sory Touré loved his people and he served the homeland whose land will be light on him, I am convinced.
In these moments of pain and emotion, I extend my condolences to his wife Mafoudia Camara and his children.
To God my friend
To God my compatriot
Rest in peace, the man, the altruist.
