September 26, 2024: World Contraception Day

The 17th World Contraception Day will take place on September 26, 2024. This day aims in particular to promote information for everyone about methods of contraception and existing information and support systems.

Recent years have seen major advances in strengthening access to contraception:

  • since 2021, the access process to voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) has been made easier (extension of the time limit for recourse to medical IVG and surgical IVG; 100% coverage by Health Insurance, without advance payment);
  • since 2022, full coverage of contraception costs applies to all women under 26;
  • since 2023, access to condoms in pharmacies is free for those under 26, and emergency contraception is available in pharmacies without a medical prescription, free of charge and without advance payment for any minor or adult;
  • In 2024, the list of condoms eligible for free delivery has been expanded.

In , these devices are increasingly better known and used by the people concerned: in 2023, the use of contraception and prevention consultations increased significantly (+52.1%), the number of boxes of condoms reimbursed up to 60% by Health Insurance to people aged 26 and over increased by 65% compared to 2022.

On the occasion of this 17th World Contraception Day, the Normandy Regional Health Agency (ARS) and Health Insurance are therefore continuing their work of informing the public about existing systems, in order to share complete and reliable information on a subject where taboos and lack of communication persist, among young people and those less young, but also to highlight examples of Normandy initiatives and structures committed to access to contraception.
