Two young children and a woman were killed on Sunday near Naples in southern Italy when the building they were living in collapsed. Investigations are underway to determine whether the fire was caused by a gas explosion.

On Sunday morning, a two-story building collapsed in Saviano, near Naples, killing two young children and a woman, probably their grandmother. “It’s a woman and we are currently extracting the body from the rubble,” Luca Cari, a firefighter spokesman, told RaiNews 24, stressing that the search operation was complicated. Local media identified the woman as the grandmother of the dead children, who lived on the second floor of the building. The mother is still missing, according to media reports.

Rescue Operations in Progress

Firefighters, assisted by more than 60 civil protection volunteers, conducted an intensive search. The father and a newborn baby were pulled from the rubble and were later hospitalized. The father is in serious condition. Investigations are underway to determine whether the collapse was caused by a gas explosion. Images posted by firefighters showed two large holes in the roof of the building, which had partly collapsed.
