Pope Francis will make an official visit to the capital of Luxembourg, Thursday September 26, 2024before going to Belgium.

This prestigious visit will be accompanied by disturbances traffic. Expect longer travel times. Here’s what to expect.

Traffic is very complicated in the Upper Town and near the station

While the districts of Luxembourg City will remain accessible, “the districts Upper Town And Station will be strongly impacted,” warns the capital.

The latter adds: “On the day of the Pope’s visit, as well as the day before, the main roads located in the city centre, in particular the Royal Boulevard, Marie-Thérèse Avenue and the FD Roosevelt Boulevardwill be prohibited for individual travel, with the exception of pedestrians. The same applies to the Gare district, where the bans will apply in particular to the Bourbon plateau.

Parking: it will not be possible to park everywhere

THE public parking lots will be generally accessible, but certain restrictions have been listed by the capital of Luxembourg:

  • Knuedler Parking : closed from midnight to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 26. Exit from the car park will be possible until 8 a.m. that day (restriction also applies to subscribers).
  • Glacis parking lot : The northern zone will be closed to parking from Sunday, September 22 at midnight to Friday, September 27 at noon. The southern zone will be inaccessible from Wednesday, September 25 at midnight to Friday, September 27 at 8 p.m.
  • Monterey Parking : access will be via Monterey Avenue only. Between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., access via Prince-Henri Boulevard will be prohibited.
  • Saint-Esprit parking lot : access and exit will be via boulevard FD Roosevelt towards the Viaduc between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Tram, bus: disruptions expected on public transport

Where possible, it is advisable to take the park and ridebut also the public transport for travel to and within Luxembourg City.

Please note, however, that disruptions are also to be expected:

  • Tram T1 : the line will run all day on two sections (Luxexpo-Hamilius and Gare Centrale-Stadion) and an adaptation is to be expected between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Bus : from 9am to approximately 6pm, due to the closure of the connection between the Gare district and the city centre, all AVL network lines running between these two destinations will be diverted. The FD Roosevelt stops on tracks 1 and 2 will be removed.
