The matches between and the RC in can sometimes be eventful. We return this Saturday, on the occasion of tonight’s match at 7 p.m., to a Rennes-Lens with relatively unknown twists and turns, that of 1996-1997.

Lens, then coached by Roger Lemerre who came to take over from the sacked Slavo Muslin, brought back a 2-2 draw from the Stade de la Route-de-, the former name of Roazhon Park, before its renovation. Tony Vairelles had opened the score in the 17th minute before Rennes turned the match around through Stéphane Guivarc’h (34th minute) and Patrice Carton (47th minute). But Titi Camara (61′) had equalized for Lens, allowing the Blood and Gold to bring back a good point. Lens had finished 13th and Rennes in 16th position in a championship with 20 clubs. Note that the Rennes team had in their ranks a future 1998 world champion (Stéphane Guivarc’h) and a future 2020 European champion (Sylvain Wiltord) with the Blues, while Lensois would become French champions a year later.

The composition of the RC Lens:

Warmuz – Delmotte, Magnier, Wallemme, Adjovi-Boco – Debève, Foé – Smicer, Vercruysse, Vairelles – Camara (Déhu, 67′).
