Schalke 04 have reportedly decided to continue without their coach Karel Geraerts, several German media outlets reported on Saturday morning. Will Jesper Fredberg seize the opportunity for the Mauves?

The second Bundesliga club, managed by Marc Wilmots, reacted after the defeat against Darmstadt 98 on Friday evening (3-5) after having led 3-0, confirming a difficult start to the season.

Schalke 04 have only collected four points from six games, not enough for the former Bundesliga club who would like to return to the German elite as quickly as possible.

Karel Geraerts joined Schalke O4 at the start of last season. His contract with Union Saint-Gilloise had been terminated by the Brussels management.

Having arrived at the Union in 2019 as assistant, Karel Geraerts, 42, was appointed T1 at the start of the 2022-2023 season following the departure of Felice Mazzu for Anderlecht.

Under the former Red Devil, the Brussels team reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, the semi-finals of the Belgian Cup and fought until the end for the championship title. Once virtually champion on the last day of the playoffs, Union finally finished 3rd, Antwerp being crowned champion and Genk finishing 2nd.

Marc Wilmots joined Schalke 04 as sporting director last January.

After the dismissal of his Danish coach, Brian Riemer, on Thursday from Sporting Anderlecht, the name of Karel Geraerts is circulating assiduously in the stands of the Lotto Park stadium.
