Cognac: bikers rediscover good reflexes during a prevention day

These one-day trainees thus followed workshops devoted to airbags or the new technical inspection. Outside, a track has been marked with cones. A small technical route that must be completed at a slow pace by chaining slaloms or roundabout turns, for example. The idea being to work on gaze, position and even control of acceleration at low speed.

Even though I ride all year round, it’s good to have a refresher.

Coming to the handlebars of a big road bike from Ars, Eric is delighted. He uses his motorcycle every day. His passage on the slow route is observed by former gendarmerie bikers. He immediately gets feedback and advice, before starting again. “We know the right actions but we perhaps don’t always apply them as we should. Even if I ride all year round, it’s good to have a refresher,” admits the driver.

It wasn’t just experienced bikers who made the trip. Isabelle did not hesitate to come from La Rochefoucauld. She obtained her motorcycle license less than a year ago. She decided to register because she found that her training had not necessarily been very complete in certain aspects. “It was very instructive on how to take turns, on trajectories. We don’t necessarily learn them more than that at driving school.”

A trip with the CRS

While some of the trainees follow the workshops, others take the road. On the program, a 70-kilometer route, supervised by bikers from the CRS motorway. Here again, the work focused on gaze placement, anticipation and even trajectories, but at a higher speed. “The behavior of the motorcycle is then no longer the same at all,” assures Major Laloubie, of the zonal motorcycle unit.

The only downside to this day was the lack of participants. “The public who register remains largely committed to our cause,” admits the police officer. There is still a long way to go to attract motorcyclists who are less receptive to prevention issues.

Next meeting in Barbezieux on 1er and June 2. Free registration at www.charente.gouv.fr/JDSM2024. 50 places are available.
