Anthony Joshua will make his return to the ring on September 21, against IBF champion Daniel Dubois. The former world champion explains his sports routine in detail.

Anthony Joshua is undoubtedly one of the most impressive athletes. The latter has been able to use his best physical abilities to carve out a path for himself into boxing legend, and he will try again this September 21 at Wembley. Indeed, the veteran will try to dethrone the young Daniel Dubois, IBF heavyweight champion since Oleksandr Usyk had to give up this title for various reasons.

‘AJ’ has a good chance of regaining his world title when you know his boxing. One punch can put out the lights, as we saw in his last fight against Francis Ngannou. To get to that level, the Watford-born boxer shared the routine he follows to keep his physical abilities at their best, despite his age.

Some of the boxer’s workouts have already gone viral and shocked fans, including his rather brutal stretching. He explains in an interview with Sky Sports why it is an important step in its preparation: ” This is a very good stretching exercise. Flexibility is important for recovery. I understand it is unusual, but it works.. »

Anthony Joshua gets to the heart of the matter

When you’re a boxer, it’s essential to have a strong neck and jaw! ‘AJ’ performs a well-known exercise: he places a towel in his mouth with a weight hanging from it, then moves his head up and down. He explains: ” Have you ever seen a pit bull hanging from a tire? Fighters do something similar with a towel. This exercise strengthens the jaw. In boxing, if you take a big hit that you don’t see coming, you can be knocked out. Mike Tyson and NFL athletes have all shown us the importance of having a thick, powerful neck. It conditions the cervicals to better absorb impacts.«

That’s not all! ‘AJ’ insists on the importance of swimming, which is a more than complete sport: “It’s really good. I have a lot of fun swimming. I can’t find the words to say it, but I’m swimming against the current. It’s quite difficult, but it’s good for fitness, not just for boxing, but in general. The more I focus on boxing, the more I do activities outside the gym. »

He then returns to an exercise for his neck, in particular the bridge with the head as support: “ I got it from Mike Tyson. A lot of wrestlers do this exercise. It’s pretty dangerous and physical therapists don’t like this type of training. But it’s good for neck conditioning. It works on flexibility and strength.. »

Finally, Sky Sports shows him a video of himself hitting a mattress: “ It was during the lockdown. My brother and cousin were renovating the house and this mattress was there. If you’re a real boxer like me, it’s like shadowboxing on the leaves of a tree. At any time, it’s practice, you have to do it. In the brain, it clicks, and it’s time to practice. »

The latter is training hard, as one can understand, and could very well put Daniel Dubois in a difficult position this Saturday, September 21, before aiming higher afterwards.
