Louis Pergaud, a teacher and writer from Franche-Comté, was a literary figure recognized during his lifetime, notably for The War of the Buttons. His death in 1915 at the age of 32 in the trenches caused a stir both in Franche-Comté and in Paris. A subscription was launched in 1924-1925 for the erection of a monument in Besançon commissioned from the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. Inaugurated in 1932, the statue recalls Pergaud’s literary work as much as his war deeds.
The monument was listed as a Historic Monument in 2024. The visit will be an opportunity to look back at this important work as well as the campaign for protection as a historic monument led by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Burgundy-Franche-Comté on the commemorative monuments of the Great War.
